As a busy working mom, I often find myself in the middle of a whirlwind. Between meetings, school runs, and family time, my home can quickly become a disorganized mess. I remember one particularly hectic week when I had to prepare for multiple meetings at home (because I work from home) while my kids were juggling their own school projects. The house was chaos, and I felt like I was drowning in toys, paperwork, and laundry.

Begin with one area at a time, such as a drawer or a shelf. This makes the task feel less daunting and allows you to see immediate results.

2. Set a Timer

Dedicate a specific amount of time—like 15 or 30 minutes—to declutter. When you have a time limit, you’re more likely to stay focused and efficient.

3. Create a Donation Box

Keep a box handy for items you no longer need or use. This makes it easier to declutter as you go about your day. At least once a year, I like to go room by room and make a list of what to donate and what we can even sell for some extra cash.

4. Embrace the One-Year Rule

If you haven’t used an item in the past year, it’s time to let it go. This rule helps you assess what’s truly essential. I am notorious for breaking this rule often when it comes to clothes. But really, get rid of those pants you keep saying you will fit into one day if they have been in your closet for years!

5. Limit Sentimental Items

It’s easy to hold onto items that carry memories. Select a few meaningful items and consider taking photos of the rest before letting them go. If you have kids, you might feel likes you want to keep EVERYTHING as a keepsake. The truth is that if they end up in box your attic for years, then are they really a keepsake?

6. Organize Digitally

Declutter your digital space by organizing files, deleting old emails, and unsubscribing from newsletters that clutter your inbox. Our email inbox can get full real quick. 7. Practice Mindfulness

Take a few minutes each day to sit quietly and focus on your breath. This practice can declutter your mind and reduce stress. Even if you just sit and take 10-20 breaths in one sitting. Breathing techniques can help relaxation response by stabilizing your heart rate and reduce muscle tension.

8. Make a Weekly Decluttering Habit

Set aside a specific day each week to tackle a small area of your home. Consistency is key to maintaining order. You know that table with all the mail? Clear it out often. Designate an area in your home as a clutter-free zone where you can relax and recharge. This space should reflect tranquility and clarity. For me, this is my bedroom. This is safe place and where I go to relax at the end of the day.

At the end of each month, reflect on what has worked and what hasn’t. Adjust your decluttering strategies as needed.
